In Reading Recovery one of the keys to success is the support student’s get to practise. Parents are so important in this process. By reading the chosen book at home they are reinforcing the strategies learned that day. It might be checking, rereading, matching, looking closely at the endings in the word etc. By the time they have also read to grandma, big brother and the reading parents at school the book is sounding much better. The teacher then helps the student with pace, fluency, phrasing, intonation, using punctuation and a whole set of other skills. So thank you kids, thank you family…your reading is the magic that makes the reading improve.
The more you read the better you get. The better you get the more you read!
Reading recovery is a highly effective literacy intervention program provided to students in grade one. Students are tested at the beginning of their second year of school and are then offered a place in Reading Recovery if they need extra help. It is one on one, thirty minutes a day of help especially designed to accelerate reading and writing. As soon as children meet grade level expectations and demonstrate they can continue to learn in the classroom they are discontinued and more children are selected for the program.
